MENA Newswire News Desk: The United Nations in collaboration with its humanitarian partners and the Lebanese government, has launched a $426 million flash appeal to address the urgent needs of civilians impacted by the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. The appeal aims to mobilize crucial resources to deliver humanitarian aid to the thousands of people affected by the escalating violence in the country.

The crisis in Lebanon, which has intensified since September 17, 2024, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian toll. According to Lebanese authorities, over 1,000 people have been killed, and more than 6,000 injured in the past two weeks alone. The number of displaced civilians has soared, with an estimated one million people affected by the violence since October 2023.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), emphasized the urgent need for international support to provide life-saving assistance. “This flash appeal aims to ensure that the most vulnerable civilians receive immediate support, including food, water, child nutrition, and essential supplies,” Laerke stated. He highlighted that many displaced families are currently housed in temporary shelters, where humanitarian agencies are already responding to their basic needs.

The funds from the flash appeal will be used to bolster relief efforts in areas where the situation is most dire. The UN and its non-governmental partners are focused on delivering vital aid to collective shelters and other locations where displaced families have sought refuge. Key priorities include providing access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care, as well as distributing food supplies and hygiene kits to those in need.

Since the violence erupted nearly a year ago, Lebanon’s humanitarian situation has worsened significantly, with the conflict further exacerbating an already fragile economy and public infrastructure. The conflict has caused widespread displacement, with families fleeing their homes in search of safety, while essential services have become increasingly strained.

The UN has called on international donors to respond swiftly to the appeal to prevent a further deterioration of the situation. According to OCHA, without immediate intervention, Lebanon’s most vulnerable populations – particularly women, children, and the elderly – will face heightened risks, including food insecurity, malnutrition, and disease outbreaks.

The $426 million flash appeal represents the UN’s latest effort to coordinate a comprehensive response to the crisis. Humanitarian agencies on the ground continue to work around the clock, providing critical support to affected communities, but they require additional funding to sustain their operations in the coming months.
