Former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a groundbreaking private-sector initiative involving a $500 billion investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The announcement, made on Tuesday alongside key figures from OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle, marks one of the largest technology ventures in history. Trump, flanked by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Softbank’s Masayoshi Son, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison, described the project as a pivotal step toward maintaining U.S. dominance in emerging technologies.

The initiative, named “Stargate,” will see each participating company commit $100 billion to launch the first phase of development. This includes constructing a massive data center in Texas, a project already underway according to Oracle’s Ellison. Trump hailed the partnership as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to American technological and energy independence, aligning the initiative with his broader campaign promises.

Masayoshi Son, the visionary behind Softbank, referred to the project as a new “golden age” for innovation, echoing Trump’s celebratory tone. OpenAI’s Altman also expressed gratitude for the administration’s support, emphasizing the strategic importance of public-private collaboration in maintaining a competitive edge over global rivals such as China. The Stargate project bears similarities to an earlier OpenAI initiative with Microsoft, initially reported in 2024, which allocated $100 billion to building an AI supercomputer.

Microsoft is rumored to be a technology partner in the Stargate venture, though its role has yet to be officially confirmed. Trump’s announcement also follows a significant policy shift. On Monday, he rescinded an executive order issued by the Biden administration that had imposed regulatory guardrails on AI development. The Biden-era framework was aimed at minimizing risks to consumers, but Trump argued it stifled innovation.

Industry leaders appear optimistic about the deregulation, which they believe will accelerate the pace of AI advancements in the U.S. Critics have pointed to the mixed track record of such ambitious collaborations. For instance, Softbank’s 2016 pledge to create 50,000 U.S. jobs yielded unclear results, and a much-publicized Trump-backed Foxconn facility in Wisconsin was largely abandoned despite initial plans for a $10 billion investment.

Nonetheless, proponents argue that the scale and strategic importance of Stargate set it apart from previous efforts. This latest announcement reinforces the critical role of AI and data infrastructure in national security and economic competitiveness. As construction progresses in Texas, the Stargate initiative is poised to become a cornerstone of the U.S. strategy to lead in the global AI race. Whether it will fully deliver on its promises remains to be seen, but the collaboration has already solidified itself as a historic moment in the evolution of artificial intelligence. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
