Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in The Hague on Tuesday, where the two leaders discussed a range of regional, global, and bilateral issues, according to official statements. During the meeting, President Erdogan welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, which was reportedly brokered through diplomatic efforts led by President Trump. Erdogan emphasized the need for the ceasefire to serve as a foundation for lasting peace in the region. He also called for urgent steps to resolve the Gaza crisis and encouraged renewed dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions over Ukraine.

“President Erdogan expressed his appreciation for the role played by the United States in facilitating the Israel-Iran ceasefire and stressed the importance of building on this momentum to achieve sustainable peace and stability,” Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said in a statement following the talks. The two leaders also reviewed the status of bilateral relations, with a focus on expanding cooperation in the areas of energy, investment, and defense. President Erdogan noted that Türkiye and the United States have significant untapped potential in these sectors and underscored the importance of advancing economic ties to meet the long-standing goal of reaching US$100 billion in annual trade volume.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the NATO Alliance and underlined the importance of enhancing its deterrence and defense capabilities in the face of growing global security challenges. As key allies, Türkiye and the United States play a central role in contributing to NATO’s collective security, officials from both sides noted. The meeting comes amid a pivotal moment for NATO, as the alliance seeks to bolster unity among its members and address ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The Israel–Iran ceasefire, announced earlier this week, has been widely seen as a rare diplomatic breakthrough in a region fraught with instability. Regional leaders have expressed cautious optimism about the agreement, though concerns remain over its long-term viability. The NATO Summit in The Hague brings together heads of state and government from across the Alliance to discuss defense cooperation, regional crises, and efforts to strengthen NATO’s strategic posture. The summit comes as member states face growing security threats, including cyberattacks, hybrid warfare, and unresolved conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
